Every so often you hit the awkward situation where a full house move is overkill but doing nothing is not an option. You spot a fridge in perfect condition on a second-hand marketplace. The children have grown up and you want to pass the old piano to a relative. Or the massage chair nobody uses needs to go into storage so the living room breathes again.
All of these share one problem: you only need one or two large items moved, but the quote from a traditional moving company can be startling. Is there really no better option for a single piece? Here is why the quotes look like that, and the cheapest way to solve it. The pricing models behind those quotes are broken down in this comparison of Call Van, hourly and all-inclusive moving.
Why moving one large item costs so much through a traditional company
1. Minimum charges
Traditional movers are built around whole-home relocations, and their costs — a full crew’s wages, running a large truck — are high. So they set a relatively high minimum charge. Even if you only need a fridge moved, you may end up paying for half a day of a whole crew to cover their call-out.
2. Not much flexibility
Their process is designed for large moves and their schedules are tight. Immediate or small jobs are hard to fit in, and the wait runs from a few days to a few weeks — awkward when you have a second-hand handover to complete.
How GoGoX solves single-item moves
Because of those two problems, GoGoX’s flexible model is the most cost-effective option for one-off jobs like a piano or a fridge — and it suits second-hand handovers particularly well.
1. You pay for the trip and the help you need
GoGoX pricing is flexible and does away with the minimum-charge problem: you pay for the distance and any extra hands you need. Piano, sofa or any other large piece, a single-item charge comes out far more reasonable than a traditional company’s.
2. Proper handling for special items
For jobs needing technique — a piano, a fridge — you can select professional moving assistance in the GoGoX app and set out the details in the remarks, such as “upright piano, three steps of stairs”. GoGoX will match a driver with the relevant experience.
Real single-item moves
Case one: an upright piano from a Yuen Long village house
Mr Cheung needed to move an old piano from his village house in Yuen Long to a relative in Tuen Mun. The access involved several steps, which demands real skill with a piano. He booked through GoGoX with the requirements clearly noted, and the platform matched an experienced team who moved it with the proper equipment and delivered it intact.
Case two: a large fridge bought second-hand online
Ms Chan found a French-door fridge on a second-hand platform, and the seller wanted it collected within three days. She booked GoGoX moving straight away; the team arrived at the seller’s home on time, completed the handover quickly and got the appliance home.
Case three: a massage chair into storage
Mr Lee decided to move a rarely used massage chair into a mini-storage unit. Given how heavy and awkwardly shaped it is, he chose GoGoX moving. The team got it out of the flat and safely into the unit, freeing up valuable space at home.
In short, for a piano, a fridge or any other single large item, there is no need to be put off by a traditional mover’s expensive minimum charge. The GoGoX moving team’s point-to-point, pay-for-what-you-need service is the smarter, more cost-effective choice.
