Worried About Moving in the Rain? Four Waterproof Packing Tricks from GoGoX Drivers

The worst part of moving in the rain is soaked boxes and damp furniture. Hong Kong’s wet season — the plum rains and typhoons from May to August in particular — brings serious rainfall, and getting a move done in that weather comes down to protecting things in advance and being able to dispatch quickly.

Three common problems when moving in the rain

– Boxes soften: an ordinary cardboard box weakens fast once wet, and the base gives way, damaging what is inside.
– Appliances and furniture take on damp: electronics and wooden furniture do badly with water — without waterproof packing you risk short circuits or warping.
– Slippery floors: corridors, lobbies and the truck tailgate all get very slippery, raising the risk of a fall or a knock.

Four waterproof packing tricks from GoGoX drivers

GoGoX drivers have plenty of experience delivering in the rain. Four of their tips:

1. Multiple tight layers of stretch film: the core protection. For large furniture or stacked boxes, wrap upwards in at least three overlapping layers of industrial stretch film to keep rain out.
2. Double-bagging: for clothes, books or important documents, bag them in a moisture-proof bag, seal it, then put that in the box. Even if the outside gets damp, the contents stay dry.
3. A tarpaulin over the top: if goods have to move through the open even briefly, lay a heavy waterproof tarpaulin over the top and rope it down so rain cannot get in from above.
4. Tape box seams in an “H” pattern: the seal is where water gets in. With waterproof packing tape, close the centre seam and both side edges completely, forming an H.

How packing materials compare

Material Water resistance Best for Advice
Industrial stretch film ★★★★★ Sofas, mattresses, large appliances Pull tight while wrapping and leave no gaps at the corners
Heavy moisture-proof bags ★★★★☆ Clothing, blankets, books Tape the opening completely shut after bagging
Waterproof tarpaulin ★★★★☆ Whole pallets, outdoor cover Secure it properly so wind cannot lift it
Cardboard boxes ★☆☆☆☆ Dry goods and non-valuables that survive a knock Never expose to rain directly — always add an outer waterproof bag

* Note that the standard GoGoX service covers point-to-point vehicle transport only. Drivers do not carry goods up and down stairs or do waterproof packing free of charge as a matter of course — prepare and pack before the driver arrives.

In short

Moving in the rain is demanding, but the right waterproof packing plus a flexible logistics partner takes the risk out of it.

FAQ

Q1: What do I do if a box gets wet and goes soft?

Stop moving that box and put a board or plastic sheet underneath it. Prevention is better: before moving in the rain, wrap the whole box in industrial stretch film, or switch to waterproof plastic storage boxes.

Q2: Will GoGoX still deliver under an amber or red rainstorm warning?

Under an amber or red rainstorm warning, GoGoX drivers generally continue to provide service. Under a black rainstorm warning or a No. 8 or higher typhoon signal, service is suspended for the safety of drivers and goods, so agree a revised time with your driver early.

Q3: Do I need to supply the waterproof materials myself?

Yes. Customers supply all waterproof materials and complete the packing before the driver arrives.

The basic GoGoX service is point-to-point transport, and drivers do not provide free carrying or protective packing. Seal your goods with stretch film and moisture-proof bags in advance. If you need physical help with stairs, tick “include door-to-door carrying” when booking and agree the fee with the driver — waterproof packing itself remains the customer’s responsibility.

Moving in the rain: common questions

What do I do with a box that has gone soft in the rain?

Stop carrying that box and get a board — wood or plastic — under it. Better to prevent it: wrap boxes fully in stretch film before a wet move, or use plastic crates instead of card.

Does GoGoX still deliver during a rainstorm or typhoon warning?

Service normally runs under an amber or red rainstorm warning. Under a black rainstorm warning, or typhoon signal 8 or above, service is suspended for the safety of drivers and goods — talk to your driver early about moving the slot.

Do I have to supply the waterproofing myself?

Yes — waterproof packing is the customer’s, and has to be done before the driver arrives. The basic service is point-to-point transport; drivers do not pack or protect goods as part of it.

🎞️ Stretch film — for sofas, mattresses and large appliances. Pull it tight and leave no gap at the corners.

🛍️ Moisture bags — for clothes, blankets and books. Tape the mouth of the bag completely shut.

🪜 Stairs involved — tick door-to-door carrying and agree the fee with the driver; the waterproofing is still yours to do.
